How are beaches changing?

Science for a living shoreline

Our science program strives to understand beaches. How are they changing? How might they change in the future? We partner with academic, public and private organizations to better understand coastal changes and what we can do about them.

Project Highlights

San Francisco dunes: How have they changed?

As a buffer between land and sea, dunes protect human communities and provide habitat for non-human communities. In partnership with a government agency, we use photogrammetry to understand how and when dunes are shifting. Better dune measurement leads to better dune management.

San Francisco flooding: what to expect?

We collaborate with the UC Santa Cruz faculty to better understand flooding risks at Ocean Beach in San Francisco. By conducting dune change analysis and modeling future sea-level rise, erosion, and storm surge, we can determine where and when to implement effective coastal protection measures.
